I am so excited to be in the Sanctuary again! I had forgotten how sweet the piano is in that space. It feels wonderful to hear the soundwaves expanding beyond what they ever could in my living room. It’s nice to be in the Sanctuary rather that nervously hovering over my computer at home on Sunday morning, screen sharing, like last year. More important, though, is seeing beloved parishioners in the pews. And even though those viewing from home are not in the room, it feels great to be live again instead of presenting pre-recorded music. I can sense you. It feels like you are there from my perspective. The music feels more alive again. My only regret is that I only have two hands with which to make music. At some point singing together will be safe again, but for now we can rejoice in this huge step towards reconnecting.
In October the music ensembles will begin to work in earnest. The singing choirs will rehearse via zoom and inevitably we will find a way to present their work in our new multi-platform services. One step at a time. Bells will meet soon, and I look forward to the not-too-distant-future when we fill the Sanctuary with beautiful ringing. If you are interested in any of the First Parish music groups, please email me. Now is a good time to get involved, as demographics and schedules change. All ensembles will evolve as we find our new ways, and I welcome all participants and ability levels. Even though things are fluid, I feel we are flowing in the right direction musically speaking. In regular years, I find it fascinating to observe the reconnecting we do in the fall… and I always feel like music can smoothen these social transitions. We’ve endured a lot, including tragic loss, so I think we need a lot of music to try and facilitate the healing process.
Senior Choir will continue to meet on Thursday nights at 7:30pm on Zoom. If you love to sing, and can read music a little, you will be a welcome addition. Email me and I will send you the zoom link. I’m excited that Bell Choir (AKA The Meetinghouse Ringers) will be meeting in person, very masked, and vaccinated, in October on Sunday nights. We will be looking to expand our number of participants as we have lost beloved members due to moves and schedule changes. That’s life. I’ll be reaching out to Youth Choirs again soon to plan our October Zoom rehearsals. It’ll be a lot of fun. We have a lot of laughs. Our dedicated Music Committee will meet soon, led by Alicia. The music program is finding some semblance of normalcy and stability. It’s been great to start gradually reconnecting with people. I look forward to catching up with all of you. In the meantime, I’m going to play that piano with all my heart and soul.
