Ten Questions with First Parish's Green Sanctuary Initiative Chair, Kristy Medina

FP: What does our Green Sanctuary Initiative do?
Kristy:
We promote being environmentally friendly within the church. We try to make the church “greener.”

FP: Who else is on your committee?
Kristy:
Kristy Medina, Sue West, Ami Hughes, Tracy Clifford, Kevin McMullin, and Rebecca Gore

FP: Why did you decide to join the Green Sanctuary Initiative?
Kristy:
Because I am a big advocate of being green. I am a Recycling Committee member for our town, I teach others how to make eco-crafts, and I have a local TV show on being green. Joining the Green Committee was a no brainer.

FP: What is your favorite part of your committee's work?
Kristy:
When we make a difference / impact to both the church and to individuals.

FP: What are some of the jobs that member do?
Kristy:
Getting guest speakers, teaching each other new things, putting together eco-friendly raffle baskets, helping out with Chelmsford’s Earth Fair, composting at the church, volunteering at the town’s styrofoam recycling event in January, etc.

FP: When does your committee meet?
Kristy:
The 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Alliance Parlor.

FP: What are your committee's goals for next year?
Kristy: To make composting during coffee hour a regular thing, to help out with the next Earth Fair, to host a vegetarian potluck and recipe exchange, and to promote a “greener” life style.

FP: How long have you been on this committee?
Kristy: about 3 years.

FP: What would you like the congregation to know, that we haven't asked you?
Kristy: I personally have put together the Chelmsford Earth Fair for the last 3 years (it has been going on for 4
years), and I will be putting it together in 2012. I would like the church’s members to attend this wonderful event. Most of our committee members have tables at the fair. Not only will people learn some things, but there are lots of great things to buy and there is some great music. Aleric Heck will be doing a magic show during it. The Earth Fair is the 2nd Saturday in May. More details to come.

FP: How can your group  help other committees?
Kristy: We can help problem solve with other committees to make things more eco-friendly yet accessible / easy to do for everyone.

FP: What are some of the events your committee has had in the past?
Kristy
: Our most popular event last year was the vegetarian talk. We also had local farmer Phil Jones come and talk about
composting and nutrient dense farming. We had a demo on how to “green” up your holiday. We also helped out at the church’s holiday fair.

FP: What openings do you currently have in your group?
Kristy: We would love to see more faces at our meetings.
