September Music Notes

I am so excited to begin another year at First Parish. I've missed everyone all summer. We have a wonderful year planned, and so much music ahead of us. Bell Choir rehearsals begin on Wednesday September 7th at 7:30 in the Sanctuary, set up starts at 7:00. If you are interested in checking it out, please join us. Only a basic ability to read music notation is necessary. We can teach you the rest, and it's really fun. Senior Choir rehearsals begin on Thursday September 8th at 7:30pm in the Sanctuary. If you love to sing, read a little music, and want to check it out, please join us. Both of these choirs are a lot of fun and essential parts of the music life of the Church. You will feel welcomed and rehearsals are always joyful.

Youth choir rehearsals begin on Sunday September 18th after church. Junior choir (age 8 through grade 7) meets 11:30-12:15 in the Sanctuary. Intermediate Choir (grade 8 through high school) rehearses 12:15-1:15 in the Sanctuary. Eighth graders who sing with Intermediate Choir must also sing with Junior Choir. Carol Choir (age 3 through 7) will start rehearsing later in the fall and will meet at 12:15 in the sanctuary. If you have any kids who love to sing, you can either contact me (see my contact info below) or just come to the rehearsal. I am also always happy to answer any questions.

I look forward to another year working with, and learning from, your amazing staff. I am also very excited for the second year of our First Parish Concert Series. I plan on performing a solo piano concert of original compositions and spiritual improvisations in November with other concerts to follow later in the Church year. More information on that later.

A quick personal note, I am happy to share some good news with this beloved community. My wife Meghan and I are expecting our third child, another baby boy, in January. We strive to raise our children with the Unitarian Universalist principles and values, so we hope someday our little guys will join us at First Parish. As always, feel free to contact me anytime.

Steve Zocchi

June Music Notes

I can hardly believe that June is upon us and the Church year is winding down. This is the end of my second year with this beloved community, though I prefer to think of it as the beginning of my third year. It's been an amazing year and we've accomplished so much. I owe a debt of gratitude to all the choirs, all the parents of choir participants, and of course the amazing staff...not to mention this incredible congregation. We have created so much music together: the Talent Show, the Concert Series, the services themselves. We have joined together in deep, meaningful music-making in a wide variety of styles, moods, and methods. It is a music director's dream to have so many resources available and to work for a congregation which is open to all heartfelt music.

I am pleased with the success of this first year of our Concert Series. I feel that it will become a vital tool for us to reach out to the larger community. With the goal of sharing our wealth of love and music with the world, we open our doors to the public and let them hear the abundance. I know we will reach some new people this way, and I am looking forward to next year. We can expand and improve going forward with what we have learned this year. I need to especially thank the Tervo family for their leadership in the May 21st concert. I was proud to participate in such an eclectic recital with such excellent musicians. And, of course, the Music Committee and other volunteers make it all possible.

There's so much to say, but I can summarize with just an expression of gratitude. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thank you for welcoming me into this family. Thank you for giving me the tools to do the best job I can. Thank you for the encouragement and support. Thank you for the hard work of so many volunteers. And thank you for being engaged, thoughtful and fun.

Your music director, Steve
