Coming of Age
Updated 9/4/06
The Coming of Age Program is for our high
school youth to reflect upon what it means for them to be
Unitarian Universalists. This is a full-year course that meets
twice a month on Sunday evenings. COA is led by the minister,
religious education director and a church member volunteer. Youth
are matched with an adult church member that serves as their
Coming of Age mentor.
The most important goals of COA are: have
fun, create a credo, and plan a COA service. The more
comprehensive goals for COA participants are:
- Discuss, reflect on, and clarify his or
her personal religious beliefs as a part of lifespan
faith development
- Develop knowledge and appreciation of the
wide diversity of belief with in the Unitarian
Universalist tradition.
- Have opportunities for independent
thinking, assuming responsibility, decision-making, and
exploration of values
- Put faith into action on his or her own
life and community
- Have recognized and celebrated the passage
from childhood to adolescence.
- Develop an understanding of the meaning,
responsibility, and privileges on church membership.
- Build positive youth/adult relationships
with mentors and facilitators.
- Be empowered to explore and express
ones own spirituality in the context of a serious
AND fun search with others.
