The Standing Committee meets on the second Thursday of the month. Our meetings start at 7:00 p.m. with a centering exercise and then we have open forum where anyone from the church can come and address the Committee. There are 10 members of the Standing Committee – nine voting members elected by the congregation and our minister, who is a non-voting member of the Committee. We hold our meetings in the Alliance Parlor and conduct them in accordance with Robert’s Rules of Order (at least we try, to the best of our ability!). Our minutes are posted on the bulletin board outside the Alliance Parlor and sent out via email through the official church email list. The agenda for the upcoming monthly meeting is also posted on the bulletin board the Sunday before we meet.

What do we do? Our bylaws charge us with being responsible for the "health and wellbeing" of First Parish. We are responsible for maintaining communication among members and committees, managing Church property, and planning for our short and long-term future. And of course we develop and manage the budget approved by the Congregation at the annual meeting. In short, we facilitate our church’s governance ministry and work with you to ensure the vitality of our community of faith.

The Human Resources Committee and Church Council are sub-committees of the Standing Committee.

2011-2012 Members of the Standing Committee:

The Nominating Committee is responsible for identifying and recruiting the elected leaders of the congregation. These positions include

  • Standing Committee
  • Nominating Committee
  • Board of Investment
  • Treasurer
  • Clerk, Collector
  • Search Committees (as needed).

The Nominating Committee also supports any committee seeking new members or a chair, as well as works closely with the Membership Committee to identify and develop future church leaders. The Nominating Committee submits a Slate of Officers to the Clerk 21 days prior to our Annual Meeting. Candidates are elected and start their terms at June Annual Meeting

The Nominating Committee consists of five voting members. The members serve overlapping terms. The fifth member may be one of the two members finishing their terms on the Standing Committee. The fifth member will serve a one-year term. Members should be well acquainted with the congregation, have a thorough understanding of First Parish and how it operates, and be imaginative, persuasive, and discreet.
