Ten Questions with First Parish's Green Sanctuary Initiative Chair, Kristy Medina

FP: What does our Green Sanctuary Initiative do?
Kristy:
We promote being environmentally friendly within the church. We try to make the church “greener.”

FP: Who else is on your committee?
Kristy:
Kristy Medina, Sue West, Ami Hughes, Tracy Clifford, Kevin McMullin, and Rebecca Gore

FP: Why did you decide to join the Green Sanctuary Initiative?
Kristy:
Because I am a big advocate of being green. I am a Recycling Committee member for our town, I teach others how to make eco-crafts, and I have a local TV show on being green. Joining the Green Committee was a no brainer.

FP: What is your favorite part of your committee's work?
Kristy:
When we make a difference / impact to both the church and to individuals.

FP: What are some of the jobs that member do?
Kristy:
Getting guest speakers, teaching each other new things, putting together eco-friendly raffle baskets, helping out with Chelmsford’s Earth Fair, composting at the church, volunteering at the town’s styrofoam recycling event in January, etc.

FP: When does your committee meet?
Kristy:
The 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Alliance Parlor.

FP: What are your committee's goals for next year?
Kristy: To make composting during coffee hour a regular thing, to help out with the next Earth Fair, to host a vegetarian potluck and recipe exchange, and to promote a “greener” life style.

FP: How long have you been on this committee?
Kristy: about 3 years.

FP: What would you like the congregation to know, that we haven't asked you?
Kristy: I personally have put together the Chelmsford Earth Fair for the last 3 years (it has been going on for 4
years), and I will be putting it together in 2012. I would like the church’s members to attend this wonderful event. Most of our committee members have tables at the fair. Not only will people learn some things, but there are lots of great things to buy and there is some great music. Aleric Heck will be doing a magic show during it. The Earth Fair is the 2nd Saturday in May. More details to come.

FP: How can your group  help other committees?
Kristy: We can help problem solve with other committees to make things more eco-friendly yet accessible / easy to do for everyone.

FP: What are some of the events your committee has had in the past?
Kristy
: Our most popular event last year was the vegetarian talk. We also had local farmer Phil Jones come and talk about
composting and nutrient dense farming. We had a demo on how to “green” up your holiday. We also helped out at the church’s holiday fair.

FP: What openings do you currently have in your group?
Kristy: We would love to see more faces at our meetings.

Ten Questions with First Parish's Table of Plenty Coordinator, Bonnie Rankin

FP: What does our Table of Plenty (TOP) Team do?
Bonnie:
We are a group of First Parish volunteers who cook and serve for Table of Plenty in Chelmsford, Inc., which is an outside organization that uses the kitchen at First Parish to serve a free hot meal every Tuesday year round.  We serve an average of 70 meals each week.

FP: Who else helps with TOP?
Bonnie:
We have a large list of ~30 people who include both First Parish members and friends of First Parish. Everyone cannot always make it when it is our turn to cook and serve, so it is good to have a large list of people to call upon. Paul Windt (head cook) and Fran Gauard (kitchen prep.) help out weekly in the kitchen. We are always looking for more help. Shifts vary depending on what your duty: Set up, cooking, serving and clean up. If you are interested please let me know at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

FP: Why did you decide to become the TOP Coordiantor?
Bonnie:
When Table of Plenty approached the church about using our kitchen as their home base, I thought it was a wonderful opportunity to get involved with local outreach. They needed a liaison between the church and the Table of Plenty so I volunteered. I also organized a team of wonderful volunteers from First Parish.

FP: What is your favorite part of  working with TOP?
Bonnie:
The actual night of the meal; helping set up, getting everyone organized, seeing everyone working together, seeing the wonderful community that we have grown here at First Parish and seeing the happy guests.

FP: What are some of the jobs that member do?
Bonnie:
We need between 12 to 16+ volunteers when it is our turn to serve. We needs Cooks, Kitchen prep, Set up, dishwashing, plating, serving, busing tables, clean up and break down, sweeping and mopping.

FP: How often does First Parish serve at Table of Plenty?
Bonnie:
We serve on an eight-week rotation. (Tuesdays)

FP: What are your committee's goals for next year?
Bonnie To continue to serve meals to those folks in need.

FP: How long have you been working with TOP?
Bonnie: I began working with the Table of Plenty in March of 2010. Our Parish Team has been involved since May of 2010 when we served our first meal.

FP: What would you like the congregation to know, that we haven't asked you?
Bonnie: I would like them to know that doing outreach ministry can be very fulfilling, by helping people you end up helping yourself.  It is a great feeling to see the wonderful community that you become a part of when you serve with Table of Plenty.

FP: How can your group  help other committees?
Bonnie: At this point we have a wonderful group of people who are trained to cook and serve meals, some of these folks can and do help with other food related outreach such as Community Table.  We continuously work with the church to walk in right relationship as we use the kitchen space, since we are one of many groups who use it.

FP: What are some of the events the Table of Plenty has had in the past?
Bonnie
: Table of Plenty has served a free meal to those in need every Tuesday since May 18th of 2010. When the Table of Plenty first began, the First Parish Team cooked and served monthly until they established more teams to help. We have also written 2 Faith in Action Grants to help them get off the ground. Ami Hughes helped us write a grant through her company, the Willis Foundation, which was granted in July 2011. Janice and Henry Tervo and the Music committee put on a wonderful benefit concert for Table of Plenty earlier this year.

FP: What openings do you currently have in your group?
Bonnie: We are always looking for more volunteers; please let me know if you are interested in getting involved.  I send out an e-mail when we know when we are serving along with the jobs we need to fill and ask those who are available to reply.  I hope you can join us.
