First Parish in Chelmsford (Unitarian Universalist) seeks a RE Coordinator for 2016-2017. We are looking for an enthusiastic engaging youth leader that will be an assistant to the Director of RE Faith Formation program. They will have some youth programming responsibilities and provide administrative support.  Youth program responsibilities will include involvement with High School Youth Social Justice/Action and Special Events in order to create strong safe healthy bonds within and beyond our community including the Coming of Age Program. The hours vary per week but will be 40 hoursin a month. Sunday hours are required. Position is August through June.

Job Status:      Part-time

FLSA:  Non-exempt (hourly)

Job Summary

 Assists in planning and implementing a religious education program under the supervision of the Director of RE Faith Formation. The RE Coordinator will provide administrative support and will have limited program responsiblities

Essential functions

On Sunday mornings:

  • Act as a substitute when the DRE is not present, as well as assist with the RE program as needed
  • Actively advocate for the RE program
  • Distribute sanctuary Sunday pew reservation signs, RE room location signs and directions to classrooms.
  • Set up and host RE information table and gather information at social hour.
  • Assist with set up before and clean up after Sunday morning activities.
  • Maintain, with DRE, forms and record data for registration, attendance, and the RE calendar.
  • Recruit, record and assist in coordinating volunteer schedules.
  • Organize and maintain the supply cabinet, snack cabinet, art closet, craft room, lending library and other RE areas.
  • Report the RE schedule in the Sunday announcements 


  • A strong commitment to Unitarian Universalist principles and Unitarian Universalist religious education philosophy, and a desire to support this ministry for our children and youth
  • Be present on Sunday mornings during the church year.
  • Demonstrate success with previous administrative experience
  • Demonstrate proficiency with current office software.

  • Ability to work with moderate supervision and to prioritize workload effectively
  • Friendly and approachable demeanor
  • Sufficient leadership skills to assume substitute DRE role when needed.

Performing music from the Baroque to the Romantic Period, including works by Johan Joachim Quantz, Franz Schubert, Richard Wagner, and Feliz Mendelssohn.

HENRY TERVO: M.M (oboe), New England Conservatory of Music; B.M.Ed, University of Lowell; oboe studies with Ralph Gomberg & John Holmes; English horn studies with Lawrence Thorstenberg. Currently: founder and music director of the "Friends of Bach" vocal/instrumental ensemble; oboe d'amore specialist; solo and chamber music performances throughout the area to benefit social action and humanitarian organizations; oboe/ensemble instructor, Indian Hill Music School; formerly: English horn, Portland Symphony Orchestra; freelance appearances with Opera Co. of Boston, Boston Ballet, Colonial and Wang Theaters; Gardner Museum chamber concerts; oboe instructor, Belmont Music school; woodwind instructor, Lynn, Lynnfield and Weston public schools and Gordon College .

JANICE PALKEN-TERVO: M.M. (cello) Yale Music School; cello studies with Aldo Parisot & Antonio Janigro. Performed with Dusseldorf Opera Theater, Kassel Opera Theater, Berlin Operetta, New Jersey Symphony, Springfield Symphony, & Pro Art Chamber Orchestra. Solo & chamber music performances throughout area; co-founder of the "Friends of Bach" vocal/instrumental ensemble.

SHAYLOR LINDSAY, M.M (piano performance), New England Conservatory of Music; B.A, Brandeis University. Piano studies with Lois Shapiro, Victor Rosenbaum, Thomas Stumpf, and Patricia Zander, and forepiano studies with Malcolm Bilson. Ms. Lindsay has appeared with such performing organizations as the Master Singers, the Concord Chorus and the Concord Orchestra. She has been featured concerto soloist with members of the Concord Orchestra, and with them has also performed in numerous chamber orchestrations of works by Bach, Mahler and Stravinsky. An accomplished accompanist, Ms. Lindsay has presented recitals with leading artists and performed regularly on the First Parish in Lexington Summer Concert Series. She is an accompanist and soloist at the Follen Church in Lexington. She has appeared live on WGBH's "Classical Performances" series as both soloist and chamber musician. Shaylor is a longtime member and current President of the Lexington Music Club. She has served on the faculty of the Long School of Music of Bard College, and is currently teaching at the Waring School where she has been on the faculty since 1981. Shaylor also maintains a teaching studio in her Lexington home.

BARBARA OREN, violin, grew up in Philadelphia but received her degrees from New England Conservatory. She plays regularly for the Boston Philharmonic and the Lexington Symphony and freelances for many other Boston performing groups. She loves playing chamber music of all kinds and is a champion of new and contemporary music. She also has a private violin studio in Lexington. When not playing the violin, she loves hiking and skiing and cheering for her beloved Red Sox.

JONATHAN KNOX, oboe, received his Bachelor of Music in Performance from Boston University. He has performed throughout Israel & Europe. Jonathan was selected as performing soloist at the Salzburg Music Festival in Austria. Additionally, he has performed with the English Chamber Orchestra with Raymond Leppard as Musical Director. Currently, Jonathan is a frequent oboist in musical groups in the New England area. Besides being a performing oboist, Jonathan is the premier oboe repairman in Boston.

CARSTEN KOWALCZYK, tenor, studied voice with Colleen Liggett at the Hochstein School in Rochester (NY), Sandra Sliker at Dartmouth, and William Hite at the New England Conservatory. His solo performances include recitals of Danish art songs and German lieder at Scandinavian Cultural Center's Nordic Hall and at Tufts with accompanists Barbara Kupferberg and William Merrill. As a member of Dartmouth's Händel Society, he performed in choral concerts, including at Carnegie Hall and at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. He holds degrees in economics from the University of Copenhagen and the University of Rochester, and is an economics professor at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
